Bensman excerpt: “They’re getting that information from Mexican, Spanish-language media, which is reporting dutifully on Biden policies such as proposing a bill for amnesty and ending deportation for at least 100 days and eliminating ICE’s ability to detain and deport. And they also are hearing from their relatives and friends who are being released after they’ve crossed into the United States with bus tickets and all the rest and heading into the interior. All of those things together are heard, and they act on those. They hear that the door’s open. They see the doors open. It’s entirely open to all of them. But the chances are better now than they’ve been in years so why not give it a shot, is what they tell me. And I’m getting that from the migrants. I’m not just guessing or something.”
“To the last migrant, they tell me that they’re coming for economic opportunity, that they are impoverished and want a better life in the United States. This is a place of opportunity, a land of opportunity. Almost all of them will eventually apply for asylum, but that is a lie. There is no political asylum for economic migrants. That’s not what the law was intended for, but they will still be allowed to use it under this administration in order to get their papers long enough to get in. And after that they don’t care if they win, lose or draw; they’re in. And that’s the end game for these guys.”
